Aston Villa smash club-record fee to sign Ollie Watkins
Englishman joined the Premier League club on a five year deal from Championship side Brentford.
Aston Villa have announced the signing of forward Ollie Watkins on a club-record deal for a fee of £28m from Brentford, the club confirmed on Wednesday.
Watkins scored 26 goals for the Bees during the 2019/20 season and was Championship’s joint top scorer along with Aleksandar Mitrovic and also helping the team to the playoffs final which ended in defeat against Fulham.
The 24-year-old becomes Villa’s second signing of the off season after defender Matty Cash, who joined the club from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £16m.
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith previously worked with Watkins when he was managing Brentford and signed him during his time with the club, the move reunites the Villa coach with the forward once again in his managerial career.
Villa were previously linked with Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson but the England International picked Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United over Villans.
Aston Villa finished the 2019/20 campaign on 17th spot and avoided the drop on the final day of the season after a draw with West Ham United.
Dean Smith’s side host Sheffield United on September 21 in their Premier League season opener.
