ATK Mohun Bagan have beaten their fierce rivals SC East Bengal 3-1 here on Friday to strengthen their position on top of the league table. Victory over East Bengal also means the Mariners did the double over their arch-rivals in this ISL season, having previously beaten them in November.
Krishna opened the scoring in the 15th minute after a long ball from Tiri found the striker, who then capitalised on East Bengal’s high defensive line with three deft touches and rounded the goalkeeper to give his side the lead and scoring his 14th league goal of the season in the process.
East Bengal had not created many chances in the first half but surprisingly equalised four minutes before halftime when Tiri headed the ball into his own net accidentally while clearing Raju Gaikwad’s throw-in.
ATK Mohun Bagan were all over their rivals in the second half and punished them for their defensive blunders and Krishna was key in his team’s both second-half goals.
David Williams restored Mohun Bagan’s one-goal lead in the 72nd minute when East Bengal defender Danny Fox gave away the ball to Krishna and the ISL golden boot leader found Williams, who then calmly placed his shot in the bottom right corner.
Spaniard Javi Hernández put the game out of East Bengal’s reach when he scored his team’s third goal in the 89th minute, created by ATK’s talisman Krishna again when his waited lob ball in the box finds Javi, who then fends off three defenders to score a towering header to confirm the victory for his team.
ATK Mohun Bagan will face Hyderabad FC in their next match on Monday, while East Bengal entertain NorthEast United.
