Mo Salah scored a hat-trick for Jurgen Klopp’s side including two penalties to ensure all three points for the champions.

Leeds United returned to the top flight of English football after an exile of 16 years with a magnificent display at Anfield the home of current Premier League winners.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side was almost certain to take home a point from the Merseyside but a late penalty from Mo Salah spoiled the perfect evening for the Yorkshire club.

Liverpool took the lead in the fourth minute of the game when Leeds new boy Robin Koch handled the ball in his own half to give their opponents a penalty which the Egyptian winger had converted comfortably putting the ball into the middle of the net with power.

Jack Harrison equalized for Leeds after just eight minutes when he picked up the ball on the left and hammer into the bottom corner after skipping past Joe Gomez and Alexander-Arnold.

Defender Virgil Van Dijk restored the lead for the champions when he scored a thumping header from Andy Robertson’s corner in the 20th minute after Leeds failed to mark the center back. However, the Netherlands captain was responsible for Leeds second goal of the day when he failed to clear the ball and gave the chance to Patrick Bamford, who converted the error committed by Van Dijk when his clearance landed into the striker’s feet.

Mo Salah restored Liverpool’s advantage once again just after the half-hour mark when scored a from a first time shot after Pascal Struijk failed headed clearance.

Marcelo Bielsa, who was managing for the first time in the Premier League showed no intention to give up against the star-studded Liverpool team and in the 66th minute, his team equalized for the third time in the match when midfielder Mateusz Klich hit a low drive after a neat touch from Helder Costa’s low ball to make it three-all.

Leeds United were certain to share the points with Liverpool after their outstanding performance following an absence of 16 years in England’s top flight but only had to settle for the defeat when their another new boy Rodrigo, who signed from Valencia in the off season fouled Fabinho with a clumsy tackle in the 88th minute inside the penalty area which ended up in Liverpool’s second penalty of the match, which Salah converted to complete his hat-trick for the day and ensure all three points for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s team travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their next Premier League tie while Leeds face Hull City in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
