This will be the first time that FIFA World Cup will be played in November and December
Football’s governing body FIFA has released the schedule for the World Cup 2022 to be held in Qatar. The opening match of the tournament will be played on the 21st of November 2022 at Al Bayt Stadium, a 60,000 capacity venue.
The schedule came exactly two years after the final of the 2018 edition at the Luzhniki Stadium
Khalifa International Stadium will host the playoff for third place on December 17 and the Lusail Iconic Stadium which has the capacity of 80,000 will host the final.
The aim to provide optimal rest to all the teams between their matches, the group stages will last 12 days with four matches per day.
“Once the pairings are known, the possibility will be discussed of providing a more beneficial kick-off time for audiences at home, or indeed for fans in Qatar with regard to the stadium allocation,” said FIFA.
Group matches will be played at 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, and 22:00 local timings and knockouts scheduled at 18:00 and 22:00.
This will be the last World Cup to have 32 teams in the tournament before the expansion to 48 for the 2026 edition.
