Chelsea confirm signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes

Senegal international has signed a five-year contract at the Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have announced the signature of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Ligue 1 club Rennes for a reported fee of 22 million pounds, the club confirmed on Thursday.

Mendy, who helped Rennes to their first-ever Champions League qualification last season by finishing third in the league has joined Frank Lampard’s team on a five-year deal.

Kepa joined Chelsea in 2018 for a fee of €80 million that made him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper to replace Thibaut Courtois but he has never matched the expectations and the price tag since his move to London.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper and current technical and performance advisor Petr Cech picked Edouard Mendy as the most suitable player to replace Kepa had also joined the club from Rennes in 2004.

Mendy kept 13 clean sheets in 33 games for Rennes during his only season with the club.
