Barcelona 1-4 PSG: Kylian Mbappé nets hat-trick in a resounding victory

Mauricio Pochettino gets his first win in the UEFA Champions League as PSG manager.

Kylian Mbappé has led Paris Saint Germain to a commanding victory over Spanish side FC Barcelona after scoring three times in a round of 16 tie.

Paris Saint Germain have thrashed FC Barcelona 4-1 at Camp Nou in the round of 16 tie of the UEFA Champions League to move one step closer to progressing to the quarterfinals.

Mbappé, who scored a hattrick for PSG in the game had previously not scored a knockout stage goal for two years in the competition.

FC Barcelona took the lead in the 27th minute of the game through Lionel Messi’s penalty when Frenkie De Jong was clipped by PSG defender Kurzawa. Five minutes later Mbappe equalised for the French club when he blasted a shot past Ter Stegen from a close range after a brilliant flick from Verratti.

PSG took the lead in the 65th minute of the game when Gerard Pique failed to clear Florennzi’s low cross to move the ball into the path of Mbappé, who then finds the net to score his and team’s second.

Everton loanee Moise Kean headed his team’s third goal in the 70th minute when Paredes found him unmarked in the far post from his free-kick to take the match out of Ronald Koeman team’s hands and five minutes before the full-time Mbappé completed his hat-trick when he scored a brilliant goal from the counter-attack led by Julian Draxler, this time finishing from a curling shot in the far top corner.

Pochettino, who is making his managerial debut with the French club in Europe’s elite club competition has put them in the driver’s seat ahead of second leg tie in Paris.

The 22-year-old French international became the only player in the competition’s history to score a hat-trick against the Spanish giants in knockout stages and third player ever after Faustino Asprilla for Newcastle and Andriy Shevchenko for Dynamo Kyiv.

PSG host FC Barcelona in the second leg of the tie on March 11, having three crucial away goals in their bag.
